POINTS OF INTEREST

Serra do Bussaco

This vast forest of 105 hectares, planted and enclosed by the Order of Discalced Carmelites in the early 17th century, features plant species from all over the world, many of them gigantic. It offers breath-taking walks through fountains, chapels, hermitages, and viewpoints throughout the mountain.

Livraria do Mondego

The Palace Hotel do Bussaco is a fairy tale castle located in the enchanted forest. The palace was built from 1888 for the last Kings of Portugal, creating a magnificent and unique architectural gem.

Mosteiro do Lorvão

Set in a verdant valley, the Lorvão Monastery dates back to the first Christian reconquest of Coimbra in 878 AD. It still retains medieval architectural elements, such as Romanesque capitals in the cloister chapels.

Moinhos de Gavinhos

Between May and October, visitors can observe the work of the miller at the Moinhos de Gavinhos and Portela de Oliveira Milling Centers in Penacova. During the rest of the year, visitors can observe the ancient art of milling flour at the water mills along the Ribeira de Lorvão.

Mirante Emídio da Silva

The Mirante Emídio da Silva, located near the former Preventório, is a project designed by the Venetian architect Nicolau Bigaglia. Inaugurated on May 31, 1908, the Mirante resembles an oriental pagoda built on the most advanced prow of the cliff, offering stunning panoramic views.

Penedo do Castro

The Penedo do Castro surprises with the grandeur of its quartzite wall. This location offers one of the most impressive panoramic views of Penacova, providing a sense of vastness over the town and its surrounding area, overlooking the Mondego Valley.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

RIVER BEACHES

The clear water of the Mondego and Alva rivers, flowing in whimsical curves between steep hills, offers visitors to Penacova the tranquillity and harmony of a scenic landscape. It allows you to enjoy nature while discovering small weirs, canals, waterwheels, and watermills.

Vimieiro River Beach

Vimieiro River Beach stands out for its bucolic landscape and features a restaurant/bar and a delimited area with parking facilities for visitors’ convenience.

Reconquinho River Beach

Located on the left bank of the Mondego River, in front of the town of Penacova, Reconquinho River Beach offers a high-quality fishing spot where you can find species such as trout, boga, barbel, and eel, among others.
